Lies, damn lies & statistics voting results
Every week, we pore over the videos to produce the player and match statistics that we need to allocate your points for the managers league. Now we’re doing our best but it’s fair to say we’re not professional sports analysts. Every week our discussions are, shall we say, “vigorous” and sometimes even “heated”. Something as simple as deciding whether a tackle counts as a tackle and if so which of the three players involved at various stages get credit, can reduce us almost to blows! And as for scrums and lineouts, it’s almost more violent in front of Phil’s telly than it was on the pitch!
We’re happy to continue this way, but we are conscious we’re not experts at this and we thought that maybe you deserve better. So we’ve looked around to see how we could get the match stats done more professionally and we’ve found a possible solution. Liverpool John Moores University’s sports science people have some very fancy (and very expensive) software, which their trained sports analysts can use to analyse our videos to the highest professional standard. They can deliver far higher quality of statistics and analysis than we could ever hope to. However, it comes at a cost. £2,700 for the rest of this season to be exact. So the vote is should we outsource the stats production to LJMU? Now we don’t actually have a spare £2,700 lying around right now so we’d have to raise it. You have to decide if the stats service you’re getting now is good enough, and if not you have to be confident that we can raise the money. Further, if we can raise that extra cash is this the right use for it?
